UNILAG 2013 Trans-Faculty Debate Won by Adegunloye Mary of Department of Political Sci.,representing Faculty of Social Sci.

Representing the Faculty of Social Sciences, Adegunloye Mary Olubukola of the Department of Political Sciences has emerged winner of the trans-faculty debate tournament.
Supporting the motion “Sovereign National Conference, is it desirable at this stage of Nigeria’s Development?”, Mary emphasized that the Nigeria is a forced union as it served the interest of the British Colonialists. She stressed that the regions forced together by the caprices of the colonialists must immediately sit to discuss whether they actually want to be together.
Opponents of the motion at the debate say Nigeria has long been together, fearing that attempts to renegotiate the union may be hijacked by selfish interests

ASUU begins nationwide strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday July 1st commenced indefinite nationwide strike. ASUU national president Dr Nasir Isa Fagge told newsmen yesterday that they are embarking on the indefinite strike because 'The Federal Government reneged in the Memorandum of Understanding MoU signed with ASUU in 2009 to pay lecturers their earn allowance.'

"The strike starts on Monday and it is going to last for as long as the Federal Government wants it. The Federal Government has refused to implement some of the issues contained in a 2009 agreement it had with us. What we are demanding as the earned allowance is not more than N12, 500 per person, yet government is saying it cannot afford such." Fagge said

According to Fagge, the Federal Government, in 2009, promised to pay lecturers N12,500 per month as earn allowance but never did. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, are also on strike

Nigerians to start paying £3, 000 to enter the UK from November

Naija people, una dey hear this one? According to a report by UK Daily Mail, visitors from 'high risk' countries in Africa and Asia will have to put up a £3,000 cash bond to enter Britain.

The money will be kept by the Government if visitors do not return home by the time their visas expire.

A pilot scheme, introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May, will target hundreds of people coming to Britain on six-month visit visas from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The countries have been picked for their high number of visa applications and what the Government sees as relatively high levels of immigration abuse and fraud, reports the Sunday Times.

Riot at University of Uyo leaves one student dead

The Engineering students of the University of Uyo this afternoon went for a peaceful demonstration to the office of the school's Vice Chancellor, Prof Comfort Ekpo, after the VC mandated students to pay N100 for the school bus which used to be free. The school management had shifted most of the Science student courses to the school's permanent site which is about 20 minutes drive from the main campus, and now made the shuttle N100. That means students will have to pay N200 to and fro everyday to the permanent campus for most of their lectures.

This was what the students were protesting this afternoon when things went crazy. The peaceful protest turned to chaos after security officials at the V.C's office tried to stop the students from gaining access to the Vice Chancellor.

The students allegedly retaliated by throwing stones at the security officials, who then called for police back-up which led to the riot. The police arrived the scene and aggravated the situation by firing shots at the students, killing at least one student. Some say two.

Angry students now proceeded to burn down the VC's office, a girls hostel and school gate. Students have been evacuated from the hostel, and the school has been shut down indefinitely.

Lagos residents spend N1b monthly for merriment & entertainment

You know what they say, aint no party like a Lagos party. And we are really spending the dough, to the tune of N1billion every month, according to the Lagos State government.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ademorin Kuye said made this known yesterday. He said:
“Over N1billion is spent monthly in Lagos state on entertainment and parties, we have the records to confirm this and these people, how many of them pay tax? The money goes into drinks, wine, food, aso-ebi and all of that and when they spend all of this money; they do not want to pay anything to the government”
"This justified the reason why local Governments demand that anyone organising events in the state must pay the Merriment Tax.”
“There is merriment tax in that constitution, its part of the rate Local Governments can collect. We have not fully utilised the benefit of the entertainment industry in this state”.
So basically, the state government is considering the introduction of merriment/party tax? How is that even going to work? Please share your thoughts on this...
